Swiftwater Rescue Technician

Designed for people working on or around rivers or running rivers privately, this course is a “must have” for anyone wishing to run rivers in rafts or kayaks. Additionally, anyone finding themselves exposed to rivers will gain an incredible amount of knowledge from this course.

The initial emphasis is on self-rescue and hazard avoidance, and other objectives include hydrology, recognizing and avoiding hazards and obstacles, effectively using basic rescue equipment, setting up basic rope systems, controlling in-water contact rescues, extrication, site control and scene management as well as understanding the common terminology related to all swift water rescue deployments

It emphasizes identifying risks, self rescue, and the various options for rescuing others. ideal for paddling enthusiasts, professional first responders and professional river guides. Learn the fundamentals of survival and rescue in moving water.

Day 1: Classroom Session

  • Swiftwater dynamics

  • Personal equipment

  • Risk management

  • Drowning and medical conditions related to swiftwater

  • Introduction to ropes, knots and gear

  • Dryland rope work

 

Day 2: River Session

  • Site safety assessment

  • Basic river signals

  • Throw bagging

  • Shallow water crossings

  • Swimming skills

  • Hazard avoidance

  • Swimming rescues

  • Rope work

 

Day 3: River Session

  • Swiftwater rescue scenario

  • Written examination

  • Debrief

 

 

Meets & Exceeds NFPA 1670 Standards


 As defined by the NFPA 1670 standard, Technician level is only achieved by becoming a water and rope technician. This is the first of three courses needed to gain “Technician” level qualifications

  • Swiftwater Rescue Training (SRT-I) NFPA

  • Swiftwater Rescue Training (SRT-II) NFPA

  • Techncial Rope Rescue – Technician Level (TRR-TL)

3 Year Swiftwater Rescue Training (SRT-I) NFPA Certification – with satisfactory practical and written skills evaluations. Certification will meet the NFPA 1670 & 1006 training objectives.
