The Bleed

Stop The Bleed

Course Cost:  $50.00+HST

Massive bleeding from any cause, but particularly from an active shooter or explosive event where a response is delayed can result in death. Victims can quickly die from uncontrolled bleeding, within five to 10 minutes.

Stop the Bleed is an initiative of the American College of Surgeons and the Hartford Consensus that provides civilian bystanders the skills and basic tools to stop uncontrolled bleeding in an emergency situation and save lives.

Similar to how the general public learns and performs CPR, the public must learn proper bleeding control techniques, including how to use their hands, dressings, and tourniquets.

The Hartford Consensus Group recommends that the response to a traumatic incident, whether involving an active shooter or some other cause of injury, in fact begins with bystander response.

It is with this in mind that the Stop The Bleed course was developed and is now being offered.

This new course teaches participants the basic life-saving medical interventions, including:

bleeding control with a tourniquet,

bleeding control with gauze packs or topical hemostatic agents,

and opening an airway to allow a casualty to breathe.

The course is designed for NON tactical law enforcement officers, firefighters, security personnel, teachers and other civilians such as those are participate in Wilderness Activities away from standard EMS help requiring this basic training.

At the completion of the course, participants will be able to:

Explain the rationale for early use of a tourniquet for life-threatening extremity bleeding.
Demonstrate the appropriate application of a tourniquet to the arm and leg.
Describe the progressive strategy for controlling hemorrhage.
Describe appropriate airway control techniques and devices.
Demonstrate the correct application of a topical hemostatic dressing (combat gauze).
